Palestinian refugees have rallied in Gustaf Adolfs torg, a town square located in central Gothenburg, Sweden, protesting the rejection of their applications for asylum by the Swedish migration authorities.

Members of the Asylum Seekers Association in Sweden said local authorities have been treating their demands on a political basis, rather than a humanitarian or legal basis.

Activists have leveled heavy criticism at the Swedish government, saying most demands for asylum were rejected without taking into consideration the squalid humanitarian conditions faced by Palestinian refugees.

Over recent years, several Palestinian refugees have been denied asylum in European countries and received immediate deportation orders.

Thousands of Palestinian refugees, including women and children, continue to risk their lives onboard migrant vessels trying to get to safety to European destinations. Scores of them have drowned at sea while several others have gone missing on the migration route.
