The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has warned of the Israeli occupation’s attempts to halt the agency’s mission in occupied Jerusalem.

UNRWA spokesman Sami Mshasha said that Israeli attempts have been under full swing in order to end the Agency’s services for Palestine refugees in Jerusalem city.

Mashasha said such endeavors emerge in Israeli plans to build an alternative school compound near Shufat refugee camp to encourage parents to register their children in schools run by the Israeli municipality in Jerusalem.

Mshasha warned that the real danger lying behind such Israeli attempts is the pressure exerted by Israel on European parliaments and other international parties to defund the agency. The EU is until this moment the largest donor for UNRWA.

A few months ago, the UN General Assembly voted to extend the mandate of UNRWA until June 30, 2023, with 169 votes in favor and nine abstentions, while the US and Israel voted against.
