The family of a Palestinian refugee who was run over and killed in a car accident in Indonesia has held the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) responsible for the death of their sibling in Sidoarjo.
A report published by Iraqalyoum daily and translated by PRC said young man Ghassan Muthana Abu Sherif, born in 1995, headed for Indonesia 2013, fleeing economic hardship and security turmoil in Iraq. He was transferred to a displacement camp along with other refugees.
The young man’s appeals to the UNHCR to enhance his situation and transfer him to a safer location had reportedly gone unheeded.
The family lashed out at the UNHCR, saying it should have worked on resetting their son in a European or American country in order to enable him to enhance his socio-economic condition.
The Iraqi newspaper also quoted Ghassan’s friends as holding the UNHCR accountable for his death, saying the refugee was a victim of UNHCR’s indifference.
