UN Chief Pushes for Urgent Probe into Israeli Massacre in Gaza

Antonio Guterres – UN Chief

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday extended his "heartfelt condolences" to a Palestinian family in the blockaded Gaza Strip, of which eight members were pronounced dead in an Israeli missile strike.

"The UN Secretary-General expresses his heartfelt condolences to the Al-Sawarkeh family and wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured,” said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for Guterres.

Haq quoted Guterres as calling on Israel to move swiftly with the investigation into the massacre.

"We are opposed to all killings of civilians," Haq told a regular press briefing. "In the case of the Sawarkeh family, it's clearly a tragedy."

Israeli sources claimed the military had been hunting a jihadist leader but accidently struck the home of the Gaza family while they were asleep early on Thursday, according to media reports.

In the middle of last week, the simmering wave of violence between Israel and Gaza resistance groups, which dwindled on Thursday morning with a fragile ceasefire, has claimed the lives of 35 Palestinians and left dozens of others injured, data by Gaza Health Ministry has indicated.
