The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor has sharply criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent statements advocating for the forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, describing his comments as explicit backing for Israel’s ongoing genocide and colonial practices.
Trump's proposal, made public on Sunday, suggested that neighboring nations like Jordan and Egypt should absorb displaced Palestinians from Gaza due to the "chaos" in the region, following over 15 months of Israeli military aggression.
The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor condemned Trump’s remarks, highlighting the immense suffering already endured by Palestinians in Gaza, where Israel's actions have resulted in catastrophic loss of life and widespread destruction. "The Palestinians in Gaza, who have already been subjected to Israel’s genocidal campaign, should not be further victimized by forced displacement," the statement read.
The organization stressed that under international law, particularly the Fourth Geneva Convention, such actions would be illegal. "The forced displacement of civilians under occupation is strictly prohibited," the Euro-Med Monitor asserted. "Any attempt to implement such plans would be a violation of the Palestinians' fundamental right to remain on their land."
The statement also condemned Trump for enabling Israel's colonial and expansionist policies, which have aimed to forcibly remove Palestinians from their ancestral land to make way for illegal settlements. Trump's suggestion that Gaza’s population be relocated to nearby countries is seen as a direct endorsement of Israel's efforts to push Palestinians out of Gaza and further entrench their displacement.
"These actions are part of a broader strategy of ethnic cleansing aimed at erasing Palestinian identity, history, and presence in the region," the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor explained. "This is not a temporary crisis—it is a systematic and ongoing campaign to destroy Palestinian communities, erase their cultural heritage, and create conditions where they are forced to flee."
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has been dire for over a year, with Israel’s military bombardment deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and water facilities. This has resulted in severe shortages of basic necessities, leaving millions of Palestinians without access to clean water, electricity, or healthcare. The systematic destruction of Gaza is seen by many as part of Israel's strategy to drive Palestinians off their land and make it uninhabitable.
Trump’s call for Jordan and Egypt to take in Palestinian refugees also clashes with the deep historical and cultural ties Palestinians have to their homeland. "Palestinians have an undeniable right to live on their land, and they should not be coerced into becoming refugees in neighboring countries," the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor added.
The report further condemned the Israeli government for its role in perpetuating this violence and displacement. "Since October 7, 2023, Israel’s actions in Gaza have amounted to genocide—deliberate mass killings, destruction of entire neighborhoods, and the eradication of Palestinian communities and culture," the statement read.
Euro-Med also highlighted the need for a united regional and global response to oppose Trump’s dangerous proposals. The organization called for immediate international action to hold Israel accountable for its violations of international law and to ensure that the Palestinian people are allowed to live in peace on their land, free from the threat of forced displacement.
"Mass displacement is not a solution to the conflict—it only perpetuates the suffering of the Palestinian people and exacerbates the injustices they have faced for decades," the group concluded. "The Palestinians have the right to self-determination and to live safely in their homeland, and the world must stand up to protect these rights."
