The death toll from Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza, which began in October 2023, has reached 49,617, reported the Palestinian Health Ministry on Thursday.
In a statement, the ministry said that at least 85 people were killed and 133 others wounded in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza earlier in the day.
Since the onset of the offensive, over 112,950 people have sustained injuries, with many victims still trapped under debris or stranded in areas inaccessible to rescue teams, the ministry added.
Israeli forces have escalated their attacks, resuming heavy airstrikes since Tuesday, which ended a fragile ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal that had been in place since January. This latest offensive has intensified the already dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
In response to the war, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Furthermore, Israel faces ongoing proceedings at the International Court of Justice, where a genocide case is being heard regarding its actions in the Palestinian enclave.
