UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini has issued a stark warning on the devastating impact of Israel’s military operation “Iron Wall” in Jenin Refugee Camp, marking 60 days since its launch.
In a statement posted on his official X account, Lazzarini described the operation as the most destructive military campaign in the occupied West Bank since the Second Intifada.
According to UNRWA, tens of thousands of Palestinian refugees from Jenin, Tulkarm, Nur Shams, and El Far’a camps have been forcibly displaced, with no clear prospects for return. Israeli forces have indicated plans to remain in the area indefinitely, further deepening the crisis.
“The ongoing Israeli operations have systematically destroyed civilian infrastructure and homes, aiming to permanently change the character of Palestinian cities and refugee camps at a scale unjustifiable by any purported military or law enforcement aims,” Lazzarini stated.
The commissioner-general also condemned the latest Israeli demolition orders for 66 more buildings in Jenin Camp, in addition to the dozens of homes already reduced to rubble. He warned that large-scale militarized operations like this must not become the norm in the West Bank.
Lazzarini accused Israel of crossing multiple red lines by violating international law, which mandates the protection of civilians, homes, and essential infrastructure.
He stressed the urgent need for families to return to their homes and for UNRWA services—such as education and healthcare—to be restored in the camp.
The agency has called for immediate international action to halt the ongoing destruction and prevent further escalation.
