Since the resumption of Israel’s military offensive on Gaza on March 18, the region has witnessed a sharp increase in casualties, with an average of 103 Palestinians killed and 223 injured every day, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the organization has raised alarms over Israel’s continued attacks and the worsening humanitarian conditions imposed on Gaza’s population.
Relentless Bombardment and Civilian Targeting
According to the Euro-Med Monitor’s field team, Israeli forces have killed at least 830 Palestinians and wounded nearly 1,800 in relentless airstrikes, artillery shelling, and drone attacks across the besieged enclave.
The organization has documented numerous instances of homes being targeted while civilians were still inside. In one recent attack, an Israeli airstrike on the al-Najjar family residence in Jabalia killed eight people, including five children.
The report underscores that Israel’s systematic bombing of residential areas and makeshift shelters—often with no military justification—amounts to a deliberate policy aimed at making Gaza uninhabitable. Many Palestinians who have already endured months of displacement and hardship are left with no safe refuge as evacuation orders continue to force them from one devastated area to another.
Journalists and Government Officials among the Victims
The ongoing bombardment has also claimed the lives of Palestinian journalists and government employees. On March 24, two journalists—Mohammed Mansour of Palestine Today TV and Hossam Shabat, a correspondent for Al Jazeera Mubasher—were killed in separate airstrikes. Mansour’s home in Khan Yunis was bombed, severely injuring his wife, while Shabat was killed in a direct attack on his vehicle.
Additionally, civilian government officials, particularly those working in education, have been targeted. Jihad al-Agha, head of the Supervision Department at the East Khan Yunis Education Directorate, was killed along with his wife and children in an airstrike on March 23.
A day later, Manar Abu Khater, Director of Education in East Khan Yunis, was killed along with two of his sons in another Israeli strike. Euro-Med Monitor emphasized that these individuals were non-combatants and their targeting constitutes a grave violation of international law.
Expanding Military Operations in Rafah
Israeli ground forces have intensified operations in Rafah’s Tel al-Sultan neighborhood since March 23, carrying out field executions and shelling civilian areas.
Witnesses reported that Israeli soldiers shot at residents attempting to flee, leaving bodies strewn across the streets. Approximately 50,000 civilians remain trapped in the area amid ongoing bombardments.
The organization has also expressed grave concerns over the fate of 15 ambulance and civil defense personnel who have been missing for four days following their detention by Israeli forces. Their continued disappearance without official acknowledgment constitutes a blatant violation of international law and raises fears of torture or extrajudicial killing.
Genocide and Forced Displacement
Euro-Med Monitor warned that Israel’s crimes in Gaza amount to a systematic campaign of genocide, with policies designed to kill, displace, and starve the population.
The destruction of homes, healthcare infrastructure, and essential services, combined with the continued blockade of humanitarian aid, is creating unbearable living conditions. In the past week alone, over 200,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced, with many more preparing to flee amid the ongoing violence.
The organization also pointed to the statements of Israeli officials who have openly supported the forced expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza, in line with U.S.-backed policies. These declarations, coupled with the continuous attacks and mass displacement, reflect a well-orchestrated plan to empty Gaza of its inhabitants.
International Silence and Urgent Calls for Action
The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor condemned the inaction of the international community, which it argues has emboldened Israel to escalate its attacks with impunity.
The group urged immediate international intervention to halt the killing of civilians, lift the blockade on Gaza, and provide urgent humanitarian assistance.
The organization called on all states, particularly those supporting Israel militarily and politically, to take immediate steps to stop the ongoing genocide, ensure the protection of Palestinian civilians, and facilitate the entry of life-saving aid into Gaza.
Without urgent international action, it warned, the current trajectory could lead to an even greater humanitarian catastrophe in the already devastated enclave.
The Israeli army launched a surprise aerial campaign on the Gaza Strip on March 18, killing 855 people, injuring nearly 1,900 others, and shattering a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that took hold in January.
The UN estimated that around 124,000 Palestinians have been displaced again since Israel resumed its attacks on Gaza.
Since October 2023, more than 50,200 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and over 113,900 injured in the Israeli military onslaught on Gaza.
