The head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, has issued a searing condemnation of the ongoing war in Gaza, declaring that the territory has become a “no land” for children.
In a powerful statement shared on his official X account (formerly Twitter), Lazzarini revealed that at least 100 children are being killed or injured every single day in Gaza since Israeli airstrikes resumed on March 18, citing figures from UNICEF.
“Harrowing,” Lazzarini wrote. “At least 100 children are reported killed or injured every day in Gaza, since the strikes resumed… Young lives cut short in a war not of children’s making.”
The UNRWA Commissioner-General said the renewed violence has obliterated any brief sense of reprieve felt during the temporary ceasefire earlier this year. “The ceasefire at the beginning of the year gave Gaza’s children a chance to survive and be children,” he said. “The resumption of the war is again robbing them of their childhood.”
According to Lazzarini, 15,000 children have reportedly been killed since the war began a year and a half ago. Aid organizations and UN agencies have repeatedly warned that children in Gaza are being disproportionately affected by the conflict, with many of them dying not only in airstrikes but also from injuries, starvation, and the collapse of medical services under siege.
“This is a stain on our common humanity,” Lazzarini declared. “Nothing justifies the killing of children wherever they are.”
He closed his remarks with an urgent call to action: “Resume the ceasefire now.”
Lazzarini’s statement adds to growing international outrage over the civilian toll in Gaza, particularly among children, as humanitarian conditions continue to deteriorate and Israeli bombardments escalate.
More than 50,600 Palestinians have been killed in the enclave since October 2023, most of them women and children.
