The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to spiral, with thousands of families forced to flee westward following fresh displacement orders issued by Israeli forces in parts of Gaza City, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
“These orders have left civilians exposed to hostilities and deprived them of access to essential services for their basic survival,” said the UN spokesperson during Friday’s daily press briefing.
With all crossings into Gaza sealed for the second consecutive month, aid agencies remain unable to bring in desperately needed supplies.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a dire warning, saying food stocks in Gaza are almost exhausted. “WFP-supported bakeries have already shut down, and food parcel distributions are also expected to cease soon,” said the spokesperson.
While limited hot meal distributions continue, the WFP cautioned that a single meal now meets just 25% or less of a person’s daily dietary needs.
Beyond hunger, public health risks are growing in overcrowded displacement sites. In Al Mawasi, three makeshift shelters are now reporting infestations of fleas and mites, causing skin rashes and other medical issues.
“Treatment requires chemical supplies and basic items that can only be accessed once border crossings are reopened,” humanitarian workers warned.
Security concerns are also mounting. With basic supplies dwindling and desperation growing, UNRWA reported looting at one of its distribution centers, along with nearby facilities.
In a social media statement, UNRWA described the incident as “not isolated, but rather a symptom of a broader breakdown in civil order.”
Meanwhile, OCHA warned that in the occupied West Bank, tens of thousands remain displaced, particularly in Jenin and Tulkarm, amid ongoing Israeli military operations.
More than 50,600 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in Israel's military onslaught since October 2023, most of them women and children.
