Gaza’s schools, once symbols of learning and protection, have become scenes of tragedy as hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians seek shelter under the UN flag, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) warned on Monday.
“People sought protection under the UN flag only for these shelters to become a place for death including for too many children,” UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said in a post on X. “No place is safe for children in Gaza. #CeasefireNow.”
Since the resumption of hostilities in Gaza five months ago, children have borne a devastating toll. According to UNICEF, an average of more than 540 children have been killed every month, based on reported figures. Aid agencies stress that these numbers point to one of the deadliest conflicts for children in recent history.
Humanitarian organizations have repeatedly appealed for an immediate ceasefire, warning that homes, schools, and even UN shelters — traditionally considered safe havens in times of war — have been reduced to rubble or targeted by strikes.
Gaza’s displaced families continue to face relentless bombardments, widespread hunger, and a collapsing health system.
