The United Nations warned on Monday that Palestinians across the Gaza Strip are enduring worsening humanitarian conditions as heavy rains and flooding destroy the makeshift shelters of displaced families.
UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher reported that people in Gaza are “cold and soaked” after days of rainstorms, with frustration mounting as rising floodwaters wash away what little they have left.
Fletcher stressed that while the UN and humanitarian partners are scaling up their response, “much more is needed,” urging the immediate lifting of remaining restrictions to allow vital aid into the enclave.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), relief teams continue to distribute tents, tarpaulins, and essential supplies, while assessing needs to guide the response. The UN has also begun fast-tracking new funds to support emergency operations.
Ramiz Alakbarov, the Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, has allocated $18 million from the Humanitarian Fund to support more than 30 projects across Gaza in anticipation of a harsh winter. These initiatives include food, nutrition, water, healthcare, shelter, and protection services.
During a visit on Monday to a displacement site in Gaza City, Alakbarov met families who lost their shelters in last week’s storms and now urgently require basic assistance. He also inspected the Rantissi pediatric hospital, which is undergoing rehabilitation after sustaining extensive wartime damage.
Alakbarov renewed calls for additional crossings, more internal routes, and approval for NGOs to bring in critical supplies.
On the political front, Haq addressed the Security Council’s recent adoption of a resolution on Gaza, calling it “an important step” toward consolidating the ceasefire.
The Secretary-General urged all parties to uphold the agreement and emphasized the need to translate diplomatic progress into concrete action on the ground.
The UN reaffirmed its commitment to scale up humanitarian assistance under the terms of the resolution and support efforts leading to the next phase of the ceasefire.
