Action Alert: Shameful attack on Baroness Tonge
The most recent attack against Baroness Tonge, for what is obviously an innocuous statement, is another shameful display of the ongoing witch hunt against her.
It’s no secret that Baroness Tonge has been a stern supporter of the Palestinian people and a vocal supporter for their human rights.     The Palestinian Return Centre, along with countless other Palestinian organizations, had the privilege of working with Baroness Tonge on numerous occasions. In every one of our delegations and during meetings with different Palestinian factions, from the highest offices, she showed commitment to a resolution based on international law, human rights and justice.  She never ceased trying to bring different factions, outside the main political process, to a moderate position endorsed by the international community, which is also the policy of her party and the British government.  It’s extremely sad to see such vitriolic attacks against her in this manner. The attacks are based on exaggerations, misinformation and even lies to manufacture a controversy. Nick Clegg and others from his party would show great strength by not appeasing to the demands for her resignation.Saying “Israel is not going to exists for ever in its current form” is not just her statement it’s the statement of the former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Omert. There is also no contradiction between this statement and a two state solution, if anything the current course of Israel totally undermines the two state solution. If you believe in the two state solution you have to concede Israel cannot exists in its current form with 600 checkpoints, an illegal separation wall, ongoing home demolitions and continued expulsion of Palestinians from East Jerusalem. It’s obvious those wishing for her resignation for a statement that is patently true and not in contradiction with British policy are on a witch hunt. The fact that they’ve managed to totally mangle this statement is shameful and worrying.PRC has written to the deputy Prime Minster, leader of the Lib Dem Nick Clegg, in support of Jenny Tonge and in condemnation of the attacks and urges others to do the same.
