The Palestinian Return Centre (PRC) has handed over a comprehensive briefing paper titled "Conditions of Palestinian Detainees in Israeli Prisons" to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture and other UN official and missions.
The document provides a harrowing account of the conditions and torture methods endured by Palestinian detainees, as reported by Khaled Mahajna, a lawyer representing the Commission of Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners' Society.
The briefing includes detailed testimonies from two detainees, journalist Muhammad Arab and Tariq Abed, held in Ofer Prison. The report highlights severe torture, including sexual assault and physical abuse, faced by the detainees. Notably, it describes how journalist Muhammad Arab witnessed the death of a fellow detainee due to medical neglect, followed by his own experience of sexual assault and severe torture.
PRC's briefing also exposes the dire living conditions in Ofer Prison, where detainees are crowded into small, poorly ventilated cells with inadequate bedding and food. The report details the presence of "torture wards" within the prison, where detainees are subjected to brutal treatment.
In its appeal to the international community, PRC called for an immediate independent investigation into these allegations, urgent medical care for the detainees, international monitoring, legal accountability for those responsible, and the improvement of living conditions in the prisons.
This briefing aims to raise global awareness and prompt swift action to address the severe human rights violations occurring within Israeli prisons, ensuring the protection and humane treatment of all detainees.
