Geneva – The Palestinian Return Centre (PRC) recently held a productive meeting with Ms. Zainab Khayoon, representative of the Iraqi Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, focusing on the challenges faced by Palestinian refugees in Iraq and proposing measures to improve their conditions. The discussion highlighted a mutual dedication to addressing the legal and humanitarian needs of the refugee community.
PRC presented a series of recommendations aimed at enhancing legal protections for Palestinian refugees, advocating for rights equivalent to those of Iraqi citizens while maintaining their refugee status. These measures are intended to strengthen the refugees' sense of stability without compromising their unique Palestinian identity.
PRC also emphasized the need to address the consequences of annulling laws such as Decision 202, which has impacted pensions, property ownership, and other rights.
Further recommendations included the reinstatement of critical benefits, such as access to public service opportunities and safeguards against losing refugee status due to temporary travel out of Iraq.
Ms. Zainab Khayoon affirmed Iraq's longstanding commitment to Palestinian refugees who have resided in Iraq since 1948, emphasizing the state’s careful efforts to ensure they enjoy full human rights. She reiterated Iraq's dedication to providing protection and support for the Palestinian community, underscoring the country’s deep solidarity with the Palestinian cause.
Ms. Khayoon also reaffirmed Iraq’s firm stance on the crisis in Gaza and expressed Iraq's readiness to advocate for Palestinian interests on the global stage.
PRC expressed its appreciation for the constructive engagement, thanking Ms. Khayoon for her commitment to supporting Palestinian rights and Iraq's ongoing efforts to ensure the dignity and protection of the Palestinians.
