The Palestinian Return Centre welcomes the recent decision by the Irish Parliament to pass a motion officially recognising the Israeli genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza.
Ireland’s Dail parliament has passed a non-binding motion agreeing that “genocide is being perpetrated before our eyes by Israel in Gaza”.
According to the Irish deputy premier: “We are also committed to supporting and promoting a strict interpretation of the Genocide Convention to ensure the highest level of protection possible for civilians caught up in situations of armed conflict and to apply the highest standards of conduct on those engaged in conflict.” [1]
There is a growing consensus among UN bodies, civil society, academia, international lawyers, and states from the Global South that Israel has been committing the crime of genocide. Yet many European states continue to provide support militarily and diplomatically to Israel and fail to recognise the crime of genocide being perpetrated against Palestinians.
Considering the Israeli government’s failure to comply with the legally binding orders from the International Court of Justice, the Palestinian Return Centre has been in the past months lobbying European parliaments, include the Irish one, to officially recognise the suffering caused by the ongoing genocide in Gaza. This recognition would provide vital attention to the plight of the Palestinian people at this most vulnerable moment in their history.

The Palestinian Return Centre calls on other states in the Global North, such as the UK, France, Italy, and Holland, whom all have a past history of colonial crimes, including genocide, to follow the recent step taken by the Irish parliament by officially recognising the genocide in Gaza, and suspend critical military and diplomatic relations with Israel.
