Following Ceasefire, PRC’s Campaign Addresses States and UN Figures to Urgently Support Gaza’s Medical Sector

The Palestinian Return Centre (PRC) has taken decisive action to draw international attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis engulfing Gaza's medical sector. As part of its "Hands-off-Doctors" campaign, PRC has reached out to UN missions in Geneva, urging immediate intervention to address the critical needs of healthcare professionals and facilities in Gaza.

This comes in the wake of the recent ceasefire agreement, which, while providing a respite from violence, does little to alleviate the dire state of Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure. PRC highlights the plight of detained medical professionals, including Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, Director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, and Dr. Mohamed Hamid Abu Mousa of Nasser Medical Complex. Dr. Abu Safiya, detained in late December 2024, has reportedly been subjected to brutal torture, including physical assault and electric shocks, according to credible reports. His family has also suffered, with the tragic death of his mother shortly after his arrest underscoring the wider human toll of these events.

PRC detailed the devastating toll on Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure. Since October 2023, Israeli forces have reportedly destroyed or incapacitated hospitals, health centres, and ambulances, leaving northern Gaza without critical care and severely disrupting emergency aid. The destruction has left the medical sector on the brink of collapse, with remaining facilities struggling to cope with overwhelming demand.

PRC urges immediate international action to investigate the detention and treatment of medical professionals, ensure accountability for the systematic destruction of healthcare infrastructure, and advocate for the unconditional release of all detained medical personnel. The organization calls for urgent humanitarian aid to rebuild Gaza’s severely depleted medical sector and demands protections for healthcare workers and facilities to prevent future violations.

PRC emphasizes that these actions represent not just a humanitarian crisis but a fundamental challenge to the principles of international law.
