Parliamentary Briefing: Recognition of the State of Palestine Will Not Change Gaza’s Reality Without Decisive Measures

London – The Palestinian Return Centre (PRC) has submitted an official briefing to Members of the UK Parliament entitled "Symbolic Recognition of the State of Palestine Falls Short Amid Ongoing Genocide", in light of the British Government’s recent announcement of its intention to recognise the State of Palestine.

The briefing examines the effectiveness of this step amid the unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe facing Palestinians, particularly in the Gaza Strip, and whether such recognition will have any tangible impact on their rights, dignity, and daily lives under occupation and siege.

In its briefing, the PRC stressed that, while long overdue in principle, recognition remains a symbolic measure with no real effect if not accompanied by concrete political, legal, and economic actions—especially at a time when international experts and human rights organisations describe what is happening in Gaza as a campaign of genocide.

The briefing warned that recognition without effective leverage will not change the structural realities of occupation, settlement expansion, and siege, and may even absolve the UK of its legal and moral responsibilities while killings and destruction continue.

The PRC urged the UK Parliament to adopt urgent and substantive measures, including:

  • An immediate suspension of arms exports to Israel in line with domestic and international law, including the Arms Trade Treaty.
  • A demand for a permanent ceasefire and full humanitarian access to Gaza.
  • Public support for international investigations before the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) into war crimes and crimes against humanity.
  • Accountability for UK-based entities, companies, and financial institutions complicit in violations.
  • The PRC concluded its briefing by stressing that MPs’ responsibilities require more than diplomatic statements and that the urgency of the moment calls for immediate and concrete actions to end complicity in crimes committed against the Palestinian people.
